From our early days of Dead shows in Las Vegas, where Tortilla wars and Marsh mellow wars were pretty common, to the glow stick wars of Phish, flinging things around a concert have become a staple. I agree with phish when they state that throwing glow sticks is not the best of ideas, and that using 22" Glowrings is better. The most recommended design is 6-10 inches in diameter. The best thing is that these are lightweight and soft, which is good for unsuspecting heads or microphones, they come in a wider range of colors, and they are cheap. If you would like more information on why not to use glow sticks, Jeff Waful has an article on JamBands.
That being said, you can still create this total experience using safe tools.

The 1980's Total Experience
It doesn't take much to get your party started old school. This set up is ideal for all types of rooms, from entry vestibules to dorm rooms. In the 80's it was about funk, and dancing in purple light. For this reason we recommend a simple Black Light. The Aluminum Foil
adds a reflective quality that enhances gyration, and can be placed along any wall. No room is complete without some image of a musician or concert.
